What’s covered under the Article

  • India’s installed renewable energy capacity surged from 75.52GW in 2014 to 232GW in 2025, marking a threefold growth.

  • Solar and wind energy drive the rise; solar capacity surged from 2.82GW to 108GW, wind energy more than doubled to 51GW.

  • Bio-power and CBG capacity increased significantly, as India targets 500GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

India has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy, recording a threefold increase in its installed green energy capacity, which stood at 232GW as of 2025, up from 75.52GW in March 2014. This impressive leap includes large hydropower projects and underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable development and energy transition.

Staggering Growth in Solar and Wind Energy

One of the biggest contributors to this exponential growth is solar energy. In March 2014, India had an installed solar capacity of just 2.82GW. By 2025, that figure has surged beyond 108GW, making India one of the top solar energy producers globally. Alongside capacity growth, there has been a dramatic reduction in solar power tariffs, which fell by nearly 80%, down to Rs. 10.95 per unit (US$ 0.13), enhancing affordability and accessibility for consumers.

Similarly, wind energy capacity in India more than doubled in the same period. In 2014, it was approximately 21GW, and by 2025, it has crossed the 51GW mark. This consistent push reflects India's aggressive policy approach and substantial private sector participation.

Manufacturing Boost in Solar Infrastructure

The boom in renewable capacity has been backed by a surge in solar module manufacturing, which reached 90GW in 2024, positioning India as a potential exporter in this domain. The government’s target is to achieve 150GW solar module manufacturing capacity by 2030.

To reduce dependency on imports, India has significantly invested in local solar cell and wafer production. As of 2024, the country boasts a 25GW solar cell production capacity and 2GW wafer production. Looking forward, plans are in place to boost this to 100GW for solar cells and 40GW for wafers by 2030.

Fully integrated production, which includes ingots, wafers, cells, and modules, is another key focus area. As of 2024, India has a 3.2GW integrated production capacity, with plans to reach 24GW by 2030. This move is crucial to establishing self-reliance in the renewable energy sector and reducing cost volatility due to external supply shocks.

Bio-Power and Compressed Biogas (CBG): A Quiet Revolution

While solar and wind get the spotlight, bio-power has also seen steady growth, increasing 42% over the last ten years—from 8.1GW in 2014 to 11.5GW in 2024. The Compressed Biogas (CBG) sector, previously nascent, has rapidly developed. In 2014, there was only one CBG project with an 8 tonnes per day (TPD) generation capacity. By 2024, this has expanded to 150 CBG projects, boasting a combined generation capacity of 1,211 TPD.

These advancements contribute directly to India’s goals of enhancing rural energy security, improving waste management, and fostering employment opportunities in the green sector.

Household Electrification and Rooftop Solar: A Growing Movement

India’s renewable energy strategy has increasingly focused on grassroots penetration, particularly through the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a government initiative aimed at encouraging rooftop solar adoption. As of 2025, 13.3 lakh households have benefitted, with 12 lakh installations completed in just the last 10 months. This not only reduces electricity costs for consumers but also supports the larger sustainability agenda.

Record Capacity Addition in 2024

India achieved a record 25GW addition in renewable energy capacity in 2024, which is a 34.63% increase over the 18.57GW added in 2023. This milestone showcases the country’s ability to scale up infrastructure rapidly and adapt to growing energy demands through clean sources.

Targets for 2030: An Ambitious Roadmap

India has set an ambitious target of 500GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. To reach this, the country must consistently add approximately 50GW annually over the next five to six years. Achieving this will require not just technological upgrades but also enhanced policy coherence, private sector engagement, and international collaboration.

To aid this effort, four major Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies (REIA)Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), NTPC, NHPC, and SJVN—have collectively issued power procurement tenders of around 44GW for FY25. These tenders will help guarantee offtake, ensuring long-term viability of large-scale green energy investments.

India's Global Standing in Renewable Energy

As of April 2024, India has overtaken Germany to become the third-largest producer of wind and solar electricity globally. This not only cements its leadership status in clean energy but also opens avenues for technology exports, carbon credit trading, and regional power cooperation.

The country’s transition is not just an environmental imperative—it’s a strategic move towards energy security, economic independence, and global leadership in the green economy.

India’s renewable energy journey over the last decade showcases visionary planning, rapid implementation, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability. As the country now prepares to scale new heights with its 500GW target, the global community watches closely—because India’s success could well be the blueprint for climate-positive economic growth in the developing world.
