Israeli Attacks Kill 21 in Gaza; Aid Seekers Among Victims, Say Medics

  • Israeli forces killed 21 Palestinians in Gaza, including three shot near a U.N. aid convoy in central Gaza.

  • Dozens were wounded as crowds gathered to receive humanitarian aid during ongoing food and supply shortages.

  • The death toll further highlights the deadly toll on civilians amid Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

At least 21 people were killed and dozens more injured on Thursday (June 26, 2025) in Israeli attacks across central Gaza, according to reports from local medical sources. Among the casualties were three individuals shot near a United Nations aid convoy, where hundreds had gathered to receive food and essential supplies.

The incident occurred on a main route in central Gaza, an area that has become a frequent site of aid distribution and civilian movement amid ongoing conflict and severe humanitarian shortages.

Gunfire Erupts During Aid Distribution

According to Palestinian medics, the fatalities included civilians waiting for humanitarian aid when Israeli gunfire broke out. Dozens of others were wounded in the same area, many suffering from gunshot injuries and shrapnel wounds.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes, with crowds scrambling for cover and emergency workers struggling to reach the injured under ongoing tension. “There was panic,” one aid volunteer said. “People were just waiting for food, and then gunshots rang out.”

Gaza’s Humanitarian Situation Deteriorates

The Gaza Strip remains in deep humanitarian crisis, with essential services crippled and millions in need of urgent aid. Aid convoys, primarily coordinated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and other NGOs, have struggled to reach large parts of the population due to ongoing airstrikes, ground operations, and damaged infrastructure.

Central Gaza has been particularly hard-hit in recent weeks, with frequent Israeli aerial and artillery bombardments targeting suspected militant positions. However, aid agencies warn that the civilian toll has been steep, with hundreds killed or injured in areas far from active combat zones.

Calls for Accountability and Ceasefire Renewed

The new round of casualties has reignited international criticism of Israel’s military strategy and renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire. Humanitarian organizations have urged all parties to respect international law, especially regarding the protection of civilians and aid operations.

“Firing on unarmed civilians queuing for aid is unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for Doctors Without Borders, adding that such incidents “undermine all efforts to alleviate suffering.”

There was no immediate response from the Israeli military, which in past incidents has said it targets militants and that it investigates reports of civilian casualties.

U.N. and NGOs Struggle to Deliver Aid

Despite international pledges to boost humanitarian support, deliveries remain sporadic and unsafe. U.N. officials report that their convoys are often delayed or obstructed, either due to ongoing military operations or lack of security guarantees from both sides.

Thursday’s deaths occurred just as one such convoy was preparing to distribute food, medicine, and basic supplies in a region where residents have had little to no access to clean water, power, or medical care for weeks.

What Lies Ahead?

As the Israel-Gaza conflict continues, the humanitarian crisis only deepens. Key developments to watch:

  • Will Israel respond to the allegations of targeting aid seekers?

  • Will the international community act on renewed calls for a ceasefire?

  • Can aid operations resume safely in central and southern Gaza?

For civilians caught in the crossfire, each day waiting in line for food now carries the risk of death.
