Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, has announced a significant government initiative aimed at supporting families affected by the recent Pakistan artillery shelling along the border in the Poonch sector. Following intense shelling that escalated tensions between India and Pakistan in early May, Sinha declared that one government job will be provided to a member of each family that lost a loved one during the attacks.

The Poonch region witnessed a surge in artillery fire between May 8 and 10, which resulted in the tragic loss of 27 lives and left over 70 people injured. These shelling attacks were part of retaliatory measures by Pakistan following India’s Operation Sindoor, aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The conflict forced thousands residing near the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in government-run relief camps.

During his recent visit to Poonch, LG Manoj Sinha met with troops as well as families grieving the loss of their loved ones due to the shelling. He confirmed the government’s decision to provide one government job per bereaved family, reaffirming that the proper rehabilitation of affected families is a top priority for the administration.

The government has already disbursed compensation of Rs 16 lakh to families of those killed, with injured victims receiving ex-gratia payments in line with official norms. The LG also conducted an assessment of damage to residential and commercial properties. Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the administration is committed to expediting compensation and restoration efforts for those affected.

LG Sinha underscored the importance of strengthening security infrastructure along the border, announcing a large-scale expansion in the construction of both individual and community bunkers under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme. “The recent shelling revealed a shortage of bunkers. We will now begin construction of more bunkers across border districts,” he said, stressing the urgency of this initiative.

Highlighting the unity of communities in Poonch, the Lieutenant Governor condemned Pakistan’s attacks on religious sites, including a gurdwara, a temple, and a mosque, calling these actions a "cowardly attempt to disrupt social harmony." He praised the resilience and courage of the people of Poonch and emphasised the collective spirit of all communities standing against efforts to sow religious divisions.

In a high-level meeting at the shelling-affected Dungus area, Sinha directed officials to prioritise the restoration of essential services, enhance healthcare infrastructure, and reinforce civil defence mechanisms. He assured that once damage assessments are completed, relief will be swiftly disbursed to victims.

“The administration is working with urgency to provide timely support and rehabilitation to those affected,” he said. He also urged the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir to support the relentless efforts of the army, police, and security forces in their fight against terrorism.

LG Sinha’s announcements come amid ongoing security challenges in the region, with a firm government stance on eliminating terror threats and strengthening border security infrastructure to protect civilians. The promise of government jobs for victims’ kin is a significant move toward socio-economic rehabilitation and support for affected families in Jammu and Kashmir.
