The Karnataka government has declared a holiday for schools, colleges, and government offices on Wednesday, in honor of former Chief Minister and Union Minister SM Krishna, who passed away on Tuesday. The state has also announced a three-day mourning period to pay tribute to Krishna, a revered figure in Karnataka's political history.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep grief at Krishna's passing and took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his condolences. He praised SM Krishna's foresight, disciplined life, and his role as a mentor in the early years of his political career. Siddaramaiah emphasized that Krishna was a statesman without adversaries, highlighting his kind nature and leadership qualities. The CM also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and admirers of Krishna, praying for his soul to rest in peace.
SM Krishna, who served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, was a towering figure in Indian politics. His tenure as External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012 under the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government further cemented his national stature. Before entering national politics, he was also the Governor of Maharashtra. His contributions to the state and nation have left a lasting impact.
Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Karnataka, SM Krishna began his political career in 1962, when he won the Maddur Assembly seat as an Independent candidate. He later joined the Praja Socialist Party before becoming a member of the Congress Party, where he spent nearly 50 years. In 2017, Krishna ended his long association with the Congress Party, citing internal confusion about the party’s direction and its relationship with mass leaders. He subsequently joined the BJP before announcing his retirement from active politics in 2023, due to his age.
Krishna had been suffering from a prolonged illness and was hospitalized earlier this year. He passed away at the age of 92.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed that SM Krishna's last rites would be performed on Wednesday evening. His passing marks the end of an era in Karnataka's political landscape, with leaders from various sectors paying tribute to his contributions and leadership.
