1 The 5000-ton North Korean destroyer crashed during a side launch in Chongjin port with parts of the hull crushed and the ship rolled onto its side.
2 Kim Jong Un called the mishap a serious accident and criminal act due to absolute carelessness and ordered the ship to be repaired before June party meeting.
3 Military analysts said the risky side launch was likely due to limited space and technical challenges faced by North Korea’s shipyard at Chongjin.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed furious condemnation following the failed launch of a new naval warship which crashed during its public reveal at the port of Chongjin on Wednesday. The 5000-ton destroyer was being lowered into the water in a side launch manoeuvre when the accident occurred.

According to North Korea’s state media Korean Central News Agency KCNA as reported by Reuters Kim labelled the incident an intolerable criminal act caused by carelessness that damaged the nation’s dignity. He made a stern assessment declaring the accident was caused by absolute carelessness irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism which could not be tolerated.

The KCNA report did not provide information about any casualties. However it noted parts of the bottom of the warship were crushed during the launch failure. Satellite images reviewed by The Associated Press showed the vessel rolled onto its side lying diagonally from the dock with most of its hull submerged and covered in blue tarps.

Military analysts explained that the side launch method was risky for a vessel of this size and speculated it was used because the shipyard at Chongjin lacked sufficient space or incline to launch the ship stern-first into the water. This method had not been previously observed in North Korea.

The incident occurred in front of a large crowd amplifying the embarrassment for Kim Jong Un and his regime. In response Kim ordered the restoration of the warship ahead of a ruling party meeting scheduled in June to recover from the public humiliation caused by the accident.

The failed launch reflects the ongoing technical and financial challenges faced by North Korea’s military and shipbuilding sector amid growing international isolation and sanctions. Despite these setbacks the regime’s leadership continues to prioritise military advancements which remain central to its strategic goals.
