The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), defending champions going into IPL 2025, concluded their campaign with a disappointing performance that fell far below expectations. After a tough season marked by inconsistency, KKR ended their IPL journey in eighth place with just five wins out of 14 matches. Their final outing was a crushing 110-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), marking the worst loss in the franchise’s IPL history.

KKR’s Tough Season: Inconsistency and Missed Opportunities

KKR’s season was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Despite entering the tournament as defending champions, the team struggled to find consistent form. Captain Ajinkya Rahane openly acknowledged the team's mixed performances, describing the season as "kind of up and down." He pointed out that several close matches, including those against Kings XI Punjab, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), could have swung in KKR’s favour, but didn’t.

Rahane stressed that winning tight matches often makes the difference in a highly competitive league like the IPL. “If you win close matches, those are the difference,” he said, reflecting on lost chances that might have altered the course of their season. Despite the setbacks, Rahane praised his teammates for their efforts and preparation, emphasizing that defending a championship comes with its unique challenges.

Rahane’s Promise: A Stronger KKR Next Year

After the humiliating loss to SRH, Rahane vowed that KKR will come back “really stronger next year.” He conveyed optimism and determination, assuring fans that the team will learn from its mistakes and put in the necessary work to regain their winning momentum in the next season.

“Preparation-wise, everyone tried their best. It’s not easy when you win a championship and come into the next season defending the title,” Rahane said. His words reflected the pressure and expectations that come with being the reigning champions and the realities of competing in a high-stakes tournament like the IPL.

Venkatesh Iyer’s Form and Rahane’s Support

One of the major talking points during KKR’s IPL 2025 campaign was the performance of Venkatesh Iyer, the team’s most expensive pick in the auction. Despite his high price tag, Iyer struggled for form and was eventually dropped for the last few matches. However, Rahane came out in defense of Iyer, praising his attitude and work ethic.

Rahane emphasized that salary or auction price does not determine a player’s commitment or effort on the field. “If a player gets 20 plus crore or if a player gets 1 or 2 crore or 3 or 4 crore, your attitude doesn’t change on the field. That’s what matters,” he said.

Rahane noted that Iyer was focused on the controllable aspects of his game and had been training hard throughout the season. Even when he was playing before an injury sidelined him, Iyer gave his best, according to Rahane. The captain pointed out that the team struggled mainly because “3-4 guys were out of form,” not because of attitude problems.

Reflection on Team Challenges and Future Focus

KKR’s struggles in IPL 2025 reflect the unpredictable and competitive nature of the tournament, where even champions can face difficult seasons. The team’s inconsistent form and key players being out of touch were major factors behind their underwhelming performance. Despite these issues, Rahane’s leadership message is clear: a focus on attitude, preparation, and hard work will drive KKR’s resurgence.

As the IPL moves forward, KKR will look to regroup, reassess their strategies, and work on team balance to ensure a stronger campaign in IPL 2026. Rahane’s vow to come back stronger is a promise that the franchise and its fans will eagerly anticipate.
