Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (June 26, 2025) asserted that language is not just a tool of communication, but the very soul of a nation, highlighting the emotional and cultural value of India’s linguistic diversity.
Speaking at an event celebrating the achievements of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag (Indian Languages Section), Mr. Shah noted that Indian languages are now being increasingly used across government administration — both at the Centre and in States — signifying a crucial shift towards linguistic self-reliance.
Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag Praised for Language Integration
Amit Shah commended the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag for its work in promoting the use of Indian languages in official governance and policy-making. The section, part of the Union Government’s larger language policy initiative, focuses on language preservation, educational inclusion, and administrative adaptation.
“The role of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag has been vital in ensuring that Indian languages are no longer sidelined but placed at the core of government functioning,” said Mr. Shah.
Indian Languages in Governance: A Policy Shift
Mr. Shah highlighted that, as part of ongoing reforms, Indian languages are being used increasingly in administrative and official work across both central ministries and state departments. This shift is aligned with the goals outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which places strong emphasis on mother tongue and regional languages.
He reiterated the government’s stance that India’s identity cannot be separated from its linguistic roots, and that language should not be limited to a functional or technical role, but seen as a symbol of civilizational continuity.
Towards Cultural and Linguistic Empowerment
The push for Indian languages in administration is also seen as a step toward cultural empowerment, making governance more inclusive, accessible, and relatable for the common citizen. Shah argued that adopting Indian languages in official domains could bridge gaps in communication and trust between the government and people.
Conclusion: Language as a Nation-Building Pillar
Amit Shah’s remarks underscore the broader vision of strengthening Indian identity through linguistic heritage. By anchoring administrative systems in Indian languages, the government hopes to create a more connected and culturally rooted governance framework.
