Lucknow ends disappointing IPL 2025 campaign on a high by completing season double over Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium
The Lucknow Super Giants, already knocked out of playoff contention, ended their IPL 2025 journey on a high note by defeating the Gujarat Titans by 33 runs on Thursday, May 22, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The match belonged to Mitchell Marsh, who hammered a scintillating century and reminded fans of his ability to dominate the T20 format.
Marsh, who has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, finally converted his form into a match-winning performance. He was aggressive from the outset, launching into the Gujarat bowlers with an array of powerful strokes. Opening the innings with Aiden Markram, Marsh put together a solid opening stand that set the foundation for a high total.
After Markram fell for a quickfire 35, Nicholas Pooran joined Marsh and the duo constructed a century partnership that took the game away from Gujarat. Pooran’s usual aggressive flair complemented Marsh’s power-hitting, and the pair took Lucknow past the 180-run mark by the 17th over.
Marsh reached his century off just 54 deliveries, peppering the boundary ropes with 11 fours and 6 sixes. He was eventually dismissed for 108, but by then, the Super Giants had surged past 200. The finishing touches were applied by Pooran and Ayush Badoni, who ensured Lucknow posted a formidable total of 212 for 5.
In reply, Gujarat Titans needed a blazing start, but Lucknow’s bowlers, especially Will O Rourke, ensured that the required run rate kept climbing. O Rourke picked up three crucial wickets, including those of Wriddhiman Saha, Sai Sudharsan, and the dangerous David Miller, effectively derailing the chase.
However, Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan refused to give up. The duo added a spirited 78-run stand for the fifth wicket, with both batsmen displaying fine strokeplay. Rutherford scored a gritty 59 off 38 balls, while Shahrukh added 42 off 26. Despite their valiant efforts, the task proved too steep as the Titans finished on 179 for 8, falling 33 runs short.
For Gujarat, this loss was a missed opportunity to finish higher on the points table. Already qualified for the playoffs, they rested some key players and lacked the edge in the field. Their bowlers failed to contain the Marsh-Pooran assault and leaked runs throughout the middle overs.
For Lucknow, this win was bittersweet. The team entered the season with high expectations but failed to find consistency. Despite the exit from playoff contention, ending the season with a commanding win over a top side offers some consolation to the fans and management.
Player of the Match was rightfully awarded to Mitchell Marsh, whose innings of 108 runs was not only entertaining but also a technical masterclass in power-hitting and strike rotation.
Post-match reactions saw Marsh stating that he was pleased to finally contribute meaningfully and that the team had nothing to lose, which helped him play freely. Pooran echoed his partner’s sentiments, stating that the goal was to enjoy the last game and play without pressure.
With this result, Lucknow Super Giants finished their IPL 2025 campaign with five wins and nine losses, while Gujarat Titans will now turn their attention to the playoffs, hoping to regroup and iron out the flaws exposed in this fixture.
As fans reflect on this season, the performance of players like Marsh, Pooran, and O Rourke offers hope for the future. On the other hand, Gujarat must reconsider their middle-over bowling plans, especially in high-scoring venues like Ahmedabad.
The IPL caravan now moves toward the knockout stage, and while Lucknow bows out, they do so with heads held high after spoiling the party for one of the league’s top sides.
