On the evening of December 9, 2024, a tragic accident occurred on SG Barve Road in Kurla, Mumbai, when a BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) electric bus, driven by Sanjay More, lost control. The bus crashed into pedestrians and vehicles, causing a devastating toll—seven people lost their lives.
As chaos erupted, a mob gathered, enraged by the tragic loss of life, and set upon the bus driver. It was at this critical moment that lawyer Ashif Hussain, who lives near the accident site, came to the rescue. Having heard the loud noise of the crash from his home, Hussain rushed to the scene, where he initially encountered two injured police officers trapped inside a vehicle. He helped transport them to the hospital before returning to assist further.
Upon his return, Hussain noticed the mob's attack on the bus driver. Despite the danger, he intervened, pleading with the crowd to stop. In the process, he was struck by the mob but persisted, ensuring that with the help of police, the driver was rescued from the fury of the crowd.
The bus conductor, in fear for his life, had sought refuge in a nearby dentist’s clinic, and Hussain assisted him as well, providing him with fresh clothes and escorting him safely to the Kurla police station.
A senior police officer commented that had Hussain not acted quickly, the driver and conductor might not have survived the mob’s wrath. This incident has shed light on the difficulties faced by drivers of electric buses. More, the bus driver, was reportedly inexperienced, having undergone just ten days of training on how to operate electric vehicles, contributing to the confusion that led to the tragic accident.
Hussain’s actions in the face of danger were widely praised, as he not only saved lives but also prevented a larger catastrophe. This event has raised important discussions about the safety of electric buses, especially regarding the training provided to drivers, and how local communities and law enforcement respond in such chaotic situations.
