  • Mumbai's Kurla bus accident on December 9 killed six and injured 43 people. The driver has been booked for culpable homicide.
  • The driver, Sanjay More, claims brake failure caused the crash, but authorities will investigate further.
  • Maharashtra CM announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia to the victims' families, and injured individuals are receiving medical care.
  • On December 9, 2024, a tragic bus accident in Mumbai's Kurla area resulted in six deaths and at least 43 injuries. The accident occurred around 9:30 PM on SG Barve Marg in the Kurla (West) suburb. The incident involved a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus, which, according to the driver, had experienced brake failure, causing the vehicle to hit pedestrians and several vehicles before crashing into the gates of a housing complex.

The bus driver, identified as Sanjay More, was immediately apprehended by locals and handed over to the police. Authorities have booked him on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and attempt to commit culpable homicide under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act. The driver was also taken to a hospital for a medical test to check for alcohol consumption, with blood samples collected for testing.

The initial reports from BEST indicate that the driver lost control of the 12-metre-long electric vehicle (EV), which was manufactured by Olectra Greentech, based in Hyderabad, and operated by BEST on a wet lease. Local authorities, however, will investigate the cause of the brake failure, which the driver claims led to the fatal crash.

In response to the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a ₹5 lakh ex gratia payment to the families of the deceased victims. The injured are being treated at various hospitals in Mumbai, including Bhabha Hospital, City Hospital, and Seven Hills Hospital. Additionally, four police personnel on bandobast duty were injured in the accident but are reported to be in stable condition.

Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande, commenting on the incident, supported the brake failure theory, explaining that the bus driver likely panicked after losing control of the vehicle and accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the bus to run over 30-35 people.

As the investigation continues, experts will determine whether the driver’s claim of brake failure is accurate and if other factors contributed to the deadly accident. The incident has sparked concerns about vehicle safety, particularly regarding electric buses, and the investigation will aim to clarify the circumstances behind this devastating crash.
