Nagpur: In a significant development following the recent violence in Nagpur, a local court has remanded 36 accused individuals to police custody till March 21. The hearing, which extended late into the night, concluded at around 2:30 am at the district sessions court. The incident, which led to widespread unrest in parts of the city, occurred due to demands for the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave.
Court Hearing and Police Action
As per police reports, 36 of the 46 accused individuals were presented before the court on Tuesday night. “The hearing went on till 2:30 am, and the court decided to remand the accused to police custody till March 21,” said a senior police officer. The remaining six accused are currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital and were not produced before the court.
Police officials confirmed that the accused face multiple charges under various sections, which have been registered at the Ganesh Peth and Tehsil police stations. Authorities have vowed to take strict action against those involved and are actively working to restore normalcy and maintain peace in the affected areas.
Curfew Imposed in Nagpur
In response to the violence, curfew has been imposed in multiple areas of Nagpur city under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The curfew was enforced after tensions escalated due to the demand for the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave. According to an official order issued by Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal, the restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
“The curfew is a precautionary measure to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents,” said Commissioner Singal. Police and security personnel have also conducted a flag march in the violence-hit areas to instil confidence among the people and ensure that peace is maintained.
How the Violence Escalated
The violence erupted in central Nagpur’s Mahal area on Monday evening, following rumours that the holy book of the Muslim community was burnt during an agitation led by a right-wing organization that was demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. These rumours triggered unrest, resulting in stone-pelting and arson in several areas.
According to police sources, 15 people were arrested during a combing operation in the Mahal area, which also houses the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters. The situation quickly escalated, prompting authorities to take stringent measures to contain the violence.
Political Reactions and Condemnations
The violence in Nagpur has drawn sharp political reactions from various quarters. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi assured that the Maharashtra government is taking strict action against those responsible for the violence. He reiterated that law and order will be maintained at all costs.
Several other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs have also condemned the violence and called for immediate action against the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have appealed for calm and peace in the region.
“We urge all communities to maintain peace and harmony. The government is committed to taking stringent action against those attempting to disturb communal harmony,” said Fadnavis.
Opposition Criticises Government
On the other hand, the opposition parties have criticised the Maharashtra government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order. Opposition leaders alleged that the administration failed to prevent the violence, despite prior warnings and intelligence inputs.
“This is a complete breakdown of law and order in Nagpur. The state government’s inaction has led to this unfortunate situation,” said a senior leader from the opposition.
Flag March and Security Measures
To ensure law and order in the region, police and security personnel conducted a flag march in the violence-hit areas. The march was aimed at instilling confidence among the residents and deterring any further untoward incidents.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The police have registered multiple cases under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other applicable laws. Authorities are continuing their investigation and have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for inciting violence.
Combing Operations and Arrests
In addition to the arrests made so far, police teams are conducting combing operations in sensitive areas to identify and apprehend more suspects involved in the violence. “We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that peace is restored and that those responsible are brought to justice,” said a senior police official.
Public Reaction and Appeal for Calm
The violence and subsequent imposition of a curfew have led to a sense of unease among the residents of Nagpur. Civic leaders and prominent community figures have appealed for calm and restraint. Religious leaders from different communities have also come forward, urging people to maintain harmony and avoid spreading rumours.
Future Preventive Measures
To prevent a recurrence of such incidents, authorities are expected to enhance intelligence gathering and strengthen community engagement in sensitive areas. The administration is also likely to increase patrolling and deploy additional security personnel in vulnerable regions.
Government's Assurance of Justice
The Maharashtra government has assured that justice will be served and that those involved in the violence will be punished as per the law. “The safety and security of all communities is our top priority,” said a government spokesperson.
As investigations continue, authorities are determined to restore normalcy and uphold communal harmony in Nagpur, ensuring that such incidents do not recur.
