Violence erupted in central Nagpur, specifically in the Chitnis Park area of Mahal, on March 17, 2025, following protests related to the demand for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. Tensions escalated as rumors circulated that the holy book of a community had been burnt during an agitation organized by right-wing groups, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, who were protesting the presence of Aurangzeb’s tomb in the city.

Curfew Imposed to Control Violence

In response to the violence, which led to stone-pelting and arson, the Nagpur Police issued an order enforcing a curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The curfew, which affects several police station limits in the city, will remain in place until further notice, as authorities attempt to restore law and order. The areas under curfew include Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar.

The Nagpur Police Commissioner, Ravinder Kumar Singal, issued the official notification, citing the need for restrictions to prevent further escalation of violence. The order prohibits gatherings of more than five people and advises residents to stay indoors except for essential medical needs. The authorities have also imposed a communication ban, prohibiting the spread of rumors that could worsen the situation.

Clashes and Police Response

The protests initially began when 200-250 members of VHP and Bajrang Dal gathered near the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal on March 17 to demand the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The protesters raised slogans, and during the agitation, a symbolic green cloth filled with cow dung cakes was displayed. Later that evening, violence broke out when a crowd of 80 to 100 people assembled in Bhaldarpura, further raising tensions.

The clashes have left 22 police personnel injured, and several vehicles were torched, while shops were vandalized in Nagpur's Hansapuri area, contributing to the unrest. Authorities have taken strict actions, with 65 protesters being arrested during combing operations in the Mahal area, which also houses the RSS headquarters.

Political Reactions and Law Enforcement Measures

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have called for calm and urged citizens to avoid violence. The state government has faced criticism from the opposition parties, which have accused it of a breakdown in law and order.

The Nagpur Police have been authorized to take further action to control the situation, including closing roads in the affected areas and seizing property involved in the unrest. The curfew order warns that anyone violating the restrictions will face punishment under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, the curfew does not apply to police officers, government employees, students appearing for essential services, or fire brigade personnel.

Underlying Issues and Escalation of Tensions

The Aurangzeb tomb row has long been a point of contention, with some right-wing groups calling for the removal of the tomb, citing the Mughal emperor’s controversial reign. The recent incidents of stone-pelting and arson reflect the deep-seated divisions over the issue. Moreover, the rumors about the holy book burning sparked a wave of anger that led to the violent protests.

As the situation remains tense, the Nagpur Police and Maharashtra authorities are working to ensure public safety and prevent further outbreaks of violence. The incident also highlights the challenges of maintaining communal harmony and law and order amid sensitive issues.

Looking Ahead: Prospects for Peace

As the curfew remains enforced, authorities are likely to monitor the situation closely and increase patrols in the affected areas. Religious tensions and provocative actions are central to the unfolding crisis, and the Nagpur Police will focus on de-escalation strategies. The outcome of the Aurangzeb tomb row protests will have significant implications for Maharashtra's political landscape, especially in light of the ongoing unrest and accusations of administrative failure.

With the state government and central leaders appealing for peace, the focus will now be on restoring public order and addressing the underlying causes of the violence.
