The Nagpur violence incident has taken a serious turn as Maharashtra Cyber identified and reported over 140 objectionable posts and videos that were intended to incite communal violence. These posts were widely circulated across Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube with the aim of aggravating tensions in the region. The cyber cell has been actively pursuing the case and identifying individuals behind these social media accounts. As of now, 10 FIRs have been registered related to the case, and efforts are ongoing to track down the culprits.

Bangladesh Connection Raises Concern

A major development came to light when the Nagpur cyber cell traced a Facebook account that was operated from Bangladesh. The user had posted a threatening message, claiming that the recent Monday riots in Nagpur were just a small incident and that much larger riots were being planned. Upon discovering this, the cyber cell contacted Facebook to immediately block the account and prevent further inflammatory content from being circulated.

Legal Action Initiated Under IT Act

To ensure that such content is swiftly removed, notices have been issued under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. This section empowers authorities to direct intermediaries to remove or disable access to content that is harmful, inflammatory, or unlawful. Additionally, notices were served under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to ascertain the true identities of those operating these accounts and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken.

Social Media Flooded with Rumours

Apart from the provocative content, social media platforms were also flooded with false information and rumours related to the violence. Several posts falsely claimed that two individuals injured in the riots had died in the hospital. However, these claims were completely baseless and misleading. The cyber cell identified 97 such posts spreading misinformation and appealed to the public not to believe or share any unverified content on social media.

Massive Arrest Drive by Nagpur Police

In response to the rising tensions, the Nagpur city police have ramped up their efforts to bring the situation under control. 18 Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have been formed to identify and apprehend those involved in the riots. So far, police have identified 200 individuals and are working to identify another 1,000 suspects based on CCTV footage from the riots. Using this evidence, police teams are aggressively pursuing those responsible, and 90 individuals have already been arrested in connection with the violence.

MVA Leaders to Meet Governor

Meanwhile, Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders have sought a meeting with the Governor at 11:30 am today. During this meeting, they intend to discuss the Nagpur violence and highlight the provocative statements made by ruling party leaders, which they believe aggravated the situation. MVA leaders will also express their concerns over the improper functioning of the Legislative Council and seek immediate corrective measures.

Government's Focus on Restoring Peace

The Maharashtra government is taking swift and decisive action to restore peace in Nagpur and prevent the spread of misinformation. The cyber cell’s quick intervention in identifying and removing inflammatory content has played a crucial role in controlling the situation. However, the authorities are also focusing on identifying individuals involved in spreading provocative content and ensuring that they are held accountable.

Call for Public Cooperation

As tensions continue to simmer, Maharashtra Cyber and Nagpur police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified or inflammatory content. Authorities have emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media to prevent the spread of rumours that could escalate the situation further.

Broader Implications for Cyber Surveillance

This incident highlights the critical role of cyber surveillance in preventing violence and maintaining law and order. The Maharashtra Cyber department has demonstrated the ability to swiftly identify, analyze, and take down objectionable content that poses a threat to public safety. Going forward, cyber monitoring and stricter social media regulations are expected to play a larger role in curbing the spread of communal violence and preventing similar incidents.

With 90 arrests made and 140+ posts flagged, Maharashtra Cyber’s efforts have been commendable in controlling the situation in Nagpur. The cyber cell’s vigilance and timely intervention have undoubtedly prevented further escalation of violence and maintained order in the region
