Speaking after the court’s decision, Batra said, “I harbor no ill will against anyone. I believe that destiny has its own course, and I accept mine with grace.”

Delhi Court Accepts CBI’s Closure Report

A special judge, Mukesh Kumar, accepted the CBI’s closure report after a detailed investigation that lasted over two years. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) could not find any substantial evidence to proceed with charges against Batra and other accused individuals.

The judge stated that he was satisfied with the probe carried out by the investigating officer (IO), noting that the investigation addressed all concerns raised by the court. Additionally, the complainant informed the court that he had no objections to the acceptance of the closure report.

The IO has investigated the matter in detail, and there is no doubt on any point regarding the investigation which has been carried out by the IO to the queries raised by this court,” said Judge Mukesh Kumar while closing the case.

Batra’s Response: No Grudge, Only Gratitude

Reacting to the court’s decision, Batra expressed his relief and gratitude, reiterating his belief in hard work, integrity, and dedication. He reflected on his journey in sports administration, highlighting that he had no political godfathers and rose purely through his own efforts.

“In our system, it is often said that one cannot dream big without strong backing. However, I have always believed in hard work, integrity, and dedication. My journey in sports administration was driven by relentless efforts and commitment to Indian sports,” he said.

Batra also emphasized that his contributions to Indian sports were not mere coincidences but the result of strategic planning and execution.

Achievements in Indian Sports Under Batra’s Leadership

Batra proudly recounted his landmark achievements during his tenure, which included:

  • India’s bronze medal in hockey at the Tokyo Olympics after a gap of 41 years.

  • India’s participation in a record 18 out of 32 sporting events at the Tokyo Olympics.

  • Securing a historic 7 medals at the Tokyo Games, marking one of India’s best Olympic performances.

From 2009 to 2022, I dedicated 18 hours a day, seven days a week, to advancing Indian sports, and I take immense pride in what was accomplished during this period,” he added.

Case Background: Allegations and CBI Investigation

The CBI registered an FIR against Narinder Batra and others in July 2022, following a three-month preliminary inquiry. The inquiry reportedly found prima facie material indicating the commission of cognizable offences, including:

  • Criminal conspiracy

  • Criminal breach of trust

  • Corruption

The case arose from a complaint alleging that Batra had renovated his office in the IOA Bhawan without prior approval from the executive board of Hockey India. It was further alleged that records were fabricated to justify and cover up the expenditure.

Closure After 2-Year Probe

Despite an extensive investigation spanning over two years, the CBI failed to gather sufficient evidence to file a chargesheet against Batra and other accused individuals. The agency informed the court that:

  • No cognizable offence could be established against Batra.

  • Allegations regarding fabrication of records and misuse of funds could not be substantiated.

The closure report also absolved other accused, including:

  • Rajinder Singh – Former president of Hockey India

  • Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad – Former secretary general of Hockey India

  • Srivastava – Executive Director of Hockey India

Batra’s Reflection: Proud of India’s Sporting Progress

Batra expressed satisfaction and pride in his contributions to Indian sports, highlighting India’s historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics as a testimony to his leadership and vision.

Achievements such as India’s bronze medal after 41 years in hockey at the Tokyo Olympics, and the country’s participation in a record 18 out of 32 sporting events, were the result of meticulous planning, strategic execution, and collective efforts among all stakeholders,” he said.

Acknowledgment of PM Narendra Modi’s Role

Batra acknowledged that he was fortunate to serve during a time when India had a Prime Minister who genuinely values sports. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to athlete welfare, gender balance in sports, and building world-class sports infrastructure.

India’s rise in sports is also due to the unwavering support and vision of PM Narendra Modi, who has prioritized sports and recognized the hard work of our athletes and administrators,” he added.

No Ill Will Towards Opponents

Batra reiterated that he held no grudge against those who worked against him. “May God bless those who have supported me, and may He also bless those who opposed me and worked for my ouster,” he said, adopting a tone of grace and acceptance.

Future Focus: Continuing Contribution to Sports

Although the case has been closed, Batra indicated that his commitment to Indian sports remains unwavering. He hinted at continuing his contributions to advancing Indian sports by mentoring young athletes and administrators.

My journey has always been about contributing to the growth of Indian sports. I will continue to support the ecosystem and ensure that India continues to excel on the global stage,” Batra concluded.

Public Reaction: Relief and Support for Batra

The closure of the case has been met with relief and support from the sports community and Batra’s supporters. Many view it as a vindication of his contributions and dedication to Indian sports, with some calling for his continued involvement in sports administration.
