  • 110 Indian students, mostly from Jammu & Kashmir, were evacuated from Iran’s Urmia University under Operation Sindhu amid Iran-Israel conflict.

  • Families gathered at Delhi Airport as the students arrived from Armenia after being relocated from the conflict zone in northwestern Iran.

  • Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh said more flights are ready and evacuations will continue; students described fear, missile attacks and gratitude.

New Delhi: After a 52-hour-long journey filled with uncertainty, 110 Indian students evacuated from war-hit Iran safely landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, in the early hours of Thursday, June 19, 2025, under the government’s Operation Sindhu. The students, most of whom were studying at Urmia University in Iran, were visibly relieved and emotional as they reunited with their families.

The evacuation comes amid escalating tensions and active conflict between Iran and Israel, with fears growing for the safety of Indian nationals, particularly students in northern Iran. The Indian government responded with urgency, organising a coordinated cross-border evacuation via Armenia.

Majority of Students from Jammu & Kashmir

Out of the 110 evacuees, 94 students hailed from Jammu and Kashmir, while others were from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. After being relocated to Yerevan, Armenia, on Tuesday, the students boarded a flight arranged by the Indian government, which brought them to Delhi early Thursday morning.

At the airport, families of students from northern states waited anxiously, while state officials from J&K and southern India were present to help students transition back to their home states.

Parents, Students Share Emotional Moments

Naseeb Ahmed, a father from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, was among those waiting. “Until I hug my son, my heart will not stop racing. Knowing he is coming back from a war zone is a relief, but these days have been extremely hard,” he said, fighting back tears.

Students walking out of the terminal described a mixture of relief and exhaustion. Nargis, a medical student from Mumbai, shared,

“Although our area in Iran was not directly hit, the constant fear of missile attacks was mentally paralysing. We thank the government for stepping in.”

Mir Khalif, another student, recalled,

“Our neighbourhood was bombed. We saw missiles flying. It was terrifying. I hope we never go through that again.”

Swift Government Action Praised

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who is also MoS for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said:

“We have planes ready. Another flight is scheduled today. We are also evacuating people from Turkmenistan. Our embassies are running 24/7 help lines for Indian nationals.”

He thanked the Armenian and Turkmen authorities for their assistance and said the Indian government would continue evacuating citizens based on the evolving situation.

Student Voices from Ground Zero

Varta, a student from Kashmir, said,

“We were the first to be evacuated. The situation was worsening. Our neighbourhood was attacked, and we didn’t feel safe. But when the Indian government reached us, it felt like home.”

Students recalled the horrifying scenes of air raid sirens and missile strikes, describing how they were confined to their rooms under curfew-like conditions, unsure of their safety.

Another student added,

The Indian embassy was constantly in touch. As soon as they found a safe corridor, they moved us quickly. We are truly grateful.”

More Evacuations on the Way

Officials indicated that several students still remain in Iran, and they are being relocated to safer regions for the time being. The government plans to conduct further evacuations as the conflict persists.

The effort has been widely lauded on social media, with #OperationSindhu trending as families, politicians, and citizens thanked the authorities for the timely and humane response.

Conclusion

Operation Sindhu has proven to be yet another example of India’s growing diplomatic and operational capability to rescue its citizens from global conflict zones. As more students and nationals remain in vulnerable regions, the government continues to monitor and act with urgency. The emotional reunion at Delhi Airport marks a moment of relief, gratitude and hope for hundreds of families who now await similar news for their loved one
