Pakistan Nominates Donald Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize Over India-Pakistan Mediation

  • Pakistan nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire.

  • Trump claims he stopped the Indo-Pak war and helped secure a treaty between Congo and Rwanda, but India denies any U.S. mediation.

  • Indian officials assert the ceasefire was achieved through direct talks with Pakistan; Trump says he deserves Nobel recognition for multiple peace efforts.

June 21, 2025 | Islamabad/Washington/New Delhi — In a move that has sparked international debate and diplomatic rebuttals, the Government of Pakistan has officially nominated U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing what it called his “decisive diplomatic intervention” and “pivotal leadership” during the recent crisis between India and Pakistan.

In a statement posted on the government’s official account on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Pakistan said President Trump’s involvement in the de-escalation of the Indo-Pak conflict deserves global recognition and reflects his “genuine commitment to peace through dialogue.”

“President Trump’s leadership during the 2025 Pakistan-India crisis manifestly showcases the continuation of his legacy of pragmatic diplomacy and effective peace-building,” the post said.

🕊️ The Claim: Trump as a Global Peacemaker

The announcement comes just a day after Trump, while addressing the press on Friday, June 20, said he “should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize” for a variety of reasons—chief among them his alleged role in halting the Indo-Pak military standoff earlier this year.

“I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize, no matter what I do,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. “I won’t get one for stopping the war between India and Pakistan, I won’t get one for ending Congo-Rwanda hostilities, and not even for the Abraham Accords, but the people know, and that’s what matters.”

Trump went on to highlight a series of what he described as peace achievements under his leadership, including:

  • Arranging a ceasefire treaty between Congo and Rwanda, expected to be signed in Washington on Monday;

  • Preventing escalation between Israel and Iran, and between Serbia and Kosovo;

  • De-escalating tensions over the Nile River dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia.

🇵🇰 Pakistan’s Praise and Rationale

In its formal justification, the Pakistani government noted:

“At a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi.”

It claimed this intervention averted a broader nuclear conflict, thereby saving “millions of lives” and maintaining regional stability.

The statement also praised Trump for his consistent willingness to mediate in the Kashmir issue, although India has consistently rejected all forms of third-party involvement in the matter.

🇮🇳 India’s Firm Denial of U.S. Mediation

India, however, has strongly rejected the notion that President Trump or any U.S. officials were involved in mediating the ceasefire. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the resolution of the crisis was achieved solely through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan.

“Prime Minister Modi clearly conveyed to Mr. Trump that at no point during or after Operation Sindoor was there any discussion, formal or informal, on mediation or trade deals,” said Misri in a video statement from the G7 Summit in Canada.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has emphasized that ceasefire understanding was initiated by Pakistan through established military channels, with no third-party involvement.

🤝 Trump’s Version of Events

Trump maintains that he brokered an informal understanding by leveraging diplomacy and promising enhanced trade relations with both India and Pakistan if hostilities ceased.

He claims that a “long night” of talks led to the “full and immediate ceasefire” announced on May 10, and he credits himself for preventing a regional war.

“We told them—stop this war and America will do a lot of trade with you. That worked,” Trump said.

🛑 John Bolton Weighs In

John Bolton, who served as Trump’s National Security Adviser during his first term, suggested the Nobel push may be driven more by personal rivalry than by diplomatic reality.

“He won’t get it for solving Russia-Ukraine. He tried to claim credit for India-Pakistan. He wants it because Obama got one,” Bolton posted on X.

🌐 The Nobel Peace Prize Debate

The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, remains one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions of diplomacy and humanitarian effort. While nominations are open to various officials and organizations worldwide, actual shortlisting and awarding remains highly selective.

Trump has previously expressed frustration at being overlooked despite his role in the Abraham Accords and North Korea summits. In contrast, former President Barack Obama received the Nobel in 2009, just months into his first term, for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy.

“I should have gotten it four or five times,” Trump said during his latest address.

🗺️ Meeting with Pakistan Army Chief, Modi Phone Call

Just days prior to Pakistan’s Nobel nomination post, Trump hosted General Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, for lunch at the White House. In remarks made later, he thanked Munir for “ending the war” and acknowledged a 35-minute phone call with Prime Minister Modi.

“I had to thank both of them. It was a major success in peacekeeping. But I know I won’t get the Nobel Prize,” Trump said.

🔍 Criticism and Reactions

Political observers and diplomatic analysts have called the Pakistani nomination “symbolic” and “unlikely to succeed”, with many arguing that the true impact of Trump’s claimed interventions remains unverifiable or exaggerated.

Others see it as a strategic move by Islamabad to earn favor in Washington or highlight India’s reluctance to accept external mediation.

“Trump is campaigning for global legitimacy through back channels. The Nobel Prize just became part of that narrative,” said Dr. Minal Deshmukh, a senior fellow at the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi.

📢 Conclusion: Symbol or Substance?

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize race has taken an unexpected political twist, with Pakistan formally nominating President Donald Trump for an accolade he has long sought. While Trump insists his diplomatic moves helped avert global crises, major players like India categorically deny any such role.

The episode underscores the complex intersection of diplomacy, perception, and political legacy—with peace efforts caught in the crossfire of conflicting narratives.
