Andhra Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, at a Madurai Hindu conference, decried misuse of free speech by anti-Hindu forces and urged unity.
-
He called Hindu tolerance a strength, not weakness, and advocated courage against cultural disrespect and misrepresentation.
-
Resolutions demanded Hindu temples be freed from government control and called for electoral unity to counter minority appeasement.
At the Muruga Bhaktargal conference organised by Hindu Munnani in Madurai, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan made an impassioned speech urging Hindu unity and decrying what he called anti-Hindu forces that misuse freedom of speech to insult Hindu beliefs and deities.
He said Hindus had endured disrespect for over 75 years, blaming the community's reluctance to confront hostile ideologies early. “Tolerance and patience of Hindus should not be mistaken for cowardice,” he asserted, while addressing a large gathering of devotees and members of Hindu Munnani, RSS, BJP, and AIADMK.
Quoting the Tamil proverb “Sadhu mirandal kaadu kollathu” (Even a forest cannot withstand the anger of a sage), he stated that Hindus must unite courageously to protect their faith, traditions, and values. “We will unite with love and win with anger,” he declared.
Condemning Misuse of Freedom of Expression
The actor-turned-politician accused certain groups of hiding behind constitutional freedoms to propagate anti-Hindu sentiments. He said that this freedom of speech is being misused to disrespect Hindu gods and customs, while calling out the so-called pseudo-secularists for their silence on issues affecting Hindus.
He stressed that in Kaliyuga, it is not Lord Murugan, but the devotees themselves who must rise to fight destructive forces.
Event Backdrop and Participation
Despite dark clouds looming overhead, the crowd remained energetic, frequently chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vetrivel Muruganukku Arogara”. The event, while largely spiritual, had a strong political undertone, with the Madras High Court having directed organisers to avoid mixing politics with devotion.
Among the attendees were a host of prominent leaders, including:
-
Kadeswara Subramaniam (Hindu Munnani State President)
-
R. Vanniarajan (RSS leader)
-
Nainar Nagendran, K. Annamalai, Tamilisai Soundararajan (BJP)
-
Sellur K. Raju, R.B. Udhayakumar, K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji, Kadambur Raju, V.V. Rajan Chellappa (AIADMK)
-
Many sanyasis and religious leaders
Notably, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was expected to address the gathering, did not attend.
Resolutions Passed at the Conference
The conference passed several key resolutions, voicing concern over issues related to Hindu temple administration, religious discrimination, and cultural integrity:
-
Freeing Hindu temples from government control:
The resolution demanded that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department should relinquish control of Hindu temples. It claimed that temple funds were being misused, citing that hundial (donation box) collections were being diverted for government officials' luxuries, like buying cars, instead of temple upkeep or rituals. -
Electoral unity among Hindus:
Another resolution emphasised that Hindus must unite electorally to counter what it claimed was a trend of political parties focusing only on minority appeasement due to the disunity among Hindus. -
Preservation of Murugan hill shrines:
The conference demanded that Karthigai Deepam be lit atop the Subramaniaswamy Temple hillock in Tirupparankundram during the Karthigai festival, and all Murugan abodes (hillocks) should be protected from encroachment by other religious groups.
Cultural Concerns Highlighted
Speakers at the event expressed concern about the erosion of Hindu traditions, citing instances of politicians wiping off 'tiruneeru' (sacred ash) before photo ops. They said that such actions were disrespectful not just to the religion but also to the cultural ethos of the Hindu community.
Though no political parties were named explicitly — in line with the court directive — the narrative was unmistakably political, hinting at alleged systematic disregard for Hinduism in contrast to protections extended to other faiths.
Conclusion
Pawan Kalyan’s strong rhetoric and the tone of the Muruga Bhaktargal conference highlight a growing sentiment among some Hindu groups — that the community must stand together, reclaim temple autonomy, and challenge perceived cultural and religious discrimination. With electoral undercurrents and religious sentiment intertwining, such calls for Hindu consolidation are likely to gain traction in the run-up to future elections.
