Speaking ahead of the 11th International Day of Yoga, the Prime Minister declared that India's healthcare model offers scalable and replicable solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by countries in the Global South.

At the heart of India’s transformation lies a robust network of Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) that form the cornerstone of the Ayushman Bharat initiative. These centres, numbering in the tens of thousands, are instrumental in early screening and detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, diabetes, and hypertension, significantly improving health outcomes by identifying conditions at treatable stages. The Prime Minister emphasised that such community-based primary healthcare facilities serve as the first line of defence, especially in rural and underserved regions.

A second pillar of India's health revolution is the Jan Aushadhi scheme, a nationwide network of public pharmacies that provide high-quality generic medicines at affordable prices. This initiative has not only brought essential medicines within reach of economically weaker sections but has also led to a drastic reduction in out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure, a persistent concern in India and across many Global South countries.

Technology plays a transformative role in India’s healthcare evolution. The Prime Minister highlighted the Digital Health Mission, which aims to digitise patient health records and create a unique digital health identity for every citizen. This platform facilitates seamless integration of vaccination tracking (especially for pregnant women and children), insurance benefits, and electronic medical records, streamlining the healthcare journey across public and private facilities.

An especially significant stride has been made in the realm of telemedicine, which has revolutionised healthcare access by bridging the geographical gap between patients and doctors. As Mr. Modi noted, India has successfully conducted over 340 million telemedicine consultations through its free national telehealth service, demonstrating the scalability and inclusivity of digital healthcare. This model has been a game-changer during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to serve patients in remote and hard-to-reach locations.

Reflecting on these reforms, Mr. Modi pointed out that India has witnessed a marked decline in personal health-related spending while also recording a significant rise in government health expenditure as a percentage of GDP. These changes reflect the country's commitment to universal health coverage (UHC) and align with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for health.

Mr. Modi stressed that India's healthcare model is not just a national success story but a global opportunity, especially for nations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America facing similar demographic, economic, and infrastructural challenges. He declared that India is ready to share its experiences, frameworks, and technological tools with other developing countries, strengthening South-South cooperation in healthcare.

The Prime Minister also praised the successful negotiations of the WHO-led Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) treaty, aimed at improving global pandemic preparedness and response systems. He hailed this treaty as a testament to global solidarity and cooperation, values that India consistently champions on international platforms.

Further reinforcing India’s global health leadership, Mr. Modi extended an invitation to the world to participate in the upcoming International Day of Yoga celebrations in June, under the theme ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health.’ This theme reflects a holistic view of health that integrates physical, mental, and environmental well-being, rooted in the ancient Indian wisdom of yoga. He positioned yoga as a soft power tool that promotes unity, wellness, and harmony in a divided world.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Modi invoked a Vedic prayer, expressing a heartfelt wish for a healthy and disease-free world, calling for global unity around shared health goals. His message was clear: the health of the most vulnerable should be the world's top priority, and India stands ready to support the global health agenda with innovation, experience, and compassion.

From community health delivery and affordable medications to digital integration and telehealth, India's healthcare journey under Mr. Modi’s leadership exemplifies how resource-constrained countries can still develop world-class systems.
