Key Points:

1: Railway Board to install AI-enabled CCTV cameras on all locomotives and key yards to monitor safety and prevent accidents. 2: Security measures will be heightened at Kumbh Mela 2025, with 900 special trains expected to accommodate over 30 crore pilgrims. 3: Prayagraj Junction will be developed as an Amrit Bharat Station, with significant infrastructure upgrades ahead of the Kumbh.

In response to the increasing number of rail accidents, the Railway Board has announced plans to install AI-enabled CCTV cameras on all locomotives and key railway yards. The decision, announced by Railway Board Chairperson and CEO Ms. Jaya Verma Sinha, aims to enhance safety measures across the railway network by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor for unusual situations that could indicate potential hazards. These AI-equipped cameras will play a crucial role in detecting and preventing accidents, ensuring the safety of passengers and railway personnel.

During a press briefing at Prayagraj Railway Junction, Ms. Sinha provided further details about the initiative, explaining that the AI-equipped CCTV cameras would be installed on all locomotives and in key yards to monitor the railway network continuously. The AI systems are designed to identify unusual situations that could lead to accidents, such as obstacles on the tracks, signal failures, or unauthorized access to restricted areas. This proactive approach aims to mitigate risks and prevent accidents before they occur, significantly improving the safety of India's railway system.

In addition to the installation of AI cameras, Ms. Sinha highlighted the importance of security measures during the upcoming Kumbh Mela 2025. Recognizing the potential threats to the railway infrastructure during such a massive event, security agencies will be deployed to ensure the safety of railway tracks and prevent incidents of vandalism or sabotage. The Kumbh Mela, a significant religious gathering, is expected to draw over 30 crore pilgrims, necessitating extensive preparations to accommodate the influx of travelers.

To manage the anticipated surge in railway traffic, approximately 900 special trains will be arranged for Kumbh Mela 2025, a substantial increase from the 530 special trains that were deployed in 2019. The additional trains are expected to facilitate the smooth transportation of the large number of pilgrims expected at the event. Ms. Sinha expressed confidence in the ongoing infrastructure and capacity expansion projects, stating that they would be completed in time to support the increased demand during the Kumbh Mela.

As part of the broader efforts to enhance the railway infrastructure in preparation for the Kumbh Mela, Prayagraj Junction is set to be developed as an Amrit Bharat Station. This development project is a key component of the Indian Railways' commitment to improving passenger amenities and station facilities. According to Ms. Sinha, part of the station's building will be completed before the Kumbh Mela, with the full project expected to be finished within the next 1 to 2 years. This upgrade is part of a larger strategy to modernize railway stations across India, ensuring that they are equipped to handle the increasing demands of the country's growing population.

Ms. Sinha also conducted a thorough review of the Kumbh Mela preparations, holding meetings with the general managers of North Central Railway, Northern Railway, and Northeast Frontier Railway. During these meetings, detailed emergency management plans were discussed, ensuring that the railways are fully prepared to respond to any potential emergencies during the Kumbh. Site inspections at various stations were also conducted to assess the progress of ongoing infrastructure projects and to identify any areas that require additional attention before the event.

Conclusion: The Railway Board's decision to install AI-enabled CCTV cameras on locomotives and key yards represents a significant step forward in improving the safety and security of India's railway network. Combined with the enhanced security measures planned for Kumbh Mela 2025 and the ongoing development of Prayagraj Junction as an Amrit Bharat Station, these initiatives demonstrate the Indian Railways' commitment to ensuring the safety and convenience of passengers. As the country prepares for one of its largest religious gatherings, these efforts will play a crucial role in managing the increased demand on the railway system and ensuring that the Kumbh Mela is a safe and successful event for all attendees.
