Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a former Union Minister and technocrat-turned-politician, officially assumed office as Kerala BJP president on Monday, March 24, 2025, with a promise to lead the NDA to power in the state, which has historically been dominated by the CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF. Addressing a gathering of enthusiastic BJP workers, Chandrasekhar vowed to transform Kerala by creating opportunities, boosting investment, and ensuring a better future for the youth.
Mission to Bring NDA to Power in Kerala
Chandrasekhar’s appointment comes at a crucial juncture when the BJP is making inroads into Kerala’s political landscape. Reflecting on the BJP’s growing influence in the state, Chandrasekhar highlighted the party’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and expressed confidence that the NDA’s momentum will lead to victory in the state.
“Kerala’s development has stagnated. Challenges remain, but the BJP’s mission is to transform the state. Without opportunities, our youth will not stay. We need a Kerala that attracts investment and creates employment,” he said, emphasising the need for a progressive and development-oriented approach to break the cycle of stagnation under successive Left and Congress governments.
Gratitude to Party Leadership and Workers
Taking over the reins as Kerala BJP chief, Chandrasekhar extended his gratitude to senior BJP leaders, acknowledging the trust placed in him by the party’s high command.
“For entrusting me with this responsibility, I wholeheartedly thank my high command—Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president J P Nadda, and others,” Chandrasekhar stated during his address.
He also expressed appreciation for the efforts of former state presidents and dedicated party workers who have sacrificed for the growth of the party in Kerala. “Their dedication will serve as a guiding force in my journey ahead,” he added.
Criticism of Kerala’s Left Government
In a pointed criticism of the Left government in Kerala, Chandrasekhar questioned how long the state could survive by relying on debt, highlighting the lack of economic opportunities and stagnation in development.
“Kerala’s reliance on debt has hindered its progress. Our youth are leaving the state due to a lack of opportunities. We need to change this narrative and create an environment where investment flows and jobs are created for our people,” Chandrasekhar asserted.
BJP’s Growing Influence in Kerala: A Political Shift
Chandrasekhar’s appointment as BJP state chief is being seen as a strategic move to capitalise on the party’s recent gains in Kerala. The BJP has gradually expanded its footprint in the state, gaining a substantial vote share in recent elections and emerging as a formidable force in Kerala’s political scenario.
Chandrasekhar highlighted this momentum, stating:
“The BJP has always been a party of workers, and it will remain so in the future. We have made significant strides in Kerala, and I am confident that we will continue to build on this momentum to lead the NDA to victory.”
Sole Nominee for BJP Kerala President
Chandrasekhar’s elevation to the top post was uncontested, as he was the sole nominee for the position. He submitted two sets of nomination papers at the BJP headquarters on Sunday, March 23, 2025, following which the party’s central observer, Pralhad Joshi, made the official announcement during the BJP’s state council meeting.
Chandrasekhar’s Vision: Economic Growth and Opportunities
Outlining his vision for Kerala, Chandrasekhar stressed the importance of economic growth, innovation, and youth empowerment. He said the BJP’s primary focus will be to attract investments and create employment opportunities to prevent the brain drain of Kerala’s youth.
“We need a Kerala that creates opportunities for its youth, attracts global investments, and transforms itself into a state that thrives on innovation and entrepreneurship. Our mission is to ensure that Kerala’s potential is fully realised under a BJP-led NDA government,” Chandrasekhar said.
Political Dynamics in Kerala: BJP’s Roadmap
Chandrasekhar’s appointment comes at a time when the BJP is seeking to consolidate its position in Kerala by leveraging its growing influence among the youth and middle class. The CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-led UDF have traditionally dominated Kerala politics, but the BJP’s inroads in recent elections have created a new political dynamic in the state.
Chandrasekhar’s strategy revolves around:
-
Strengthening Grassroots Presence: Mobilising BJP’s cadre base and strengthening its influence at the panchayat and municipal levels.
-
Expanding Voter Base: Engaging with youth, professionals, and middle-class voters to expand BJP’s support beyond traditional vote banks.
-
Capitalising on Anti-Left Sentiment: Leveraging the growing dissatisfaction with the Left government over corruption, debt, and lack of opportunities.
BJP’s Plans for 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections
Chandrasekhar’s leadership is expected to shape BJP’s strategy for the 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections, where the party aims to increase its tally and establish itself as a viable alternative to the LDF and UDF.
Political analysts believe that Chandrasekhar’s experience as a technocrat, policymaker, and Union Minister will play a pivotal role in crafting BJP’s narrative around development, economic reforms, and governance in Kerala.
Chandrasekhar’s Political Journey: From Technocrat to BJP Leader
Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s journey from a successful technocrat to a BJP leader has been marked by dedication and service. A former Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Chandrasekhar played a crucial role in shaping India’s digital policies and promoting innovation in the technology sector.
After joining the BJP, he emerged as a prominent voice on issues related to technology, economy, and governance, making significant contributions to BJP’s policy framework.
Public Reaction: Anticipation and Optimism
Chandrasekhar’s appointment as Kerala BJP president has evoked optimism among BJP supporters, with many viewing it as a sign of the party’s growing influence in the state. Political observers are closely watching how his leadership will reshape Kerala’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
As Rajeev Chandrasekhar embarks on his journey to lead the BJP in Kerala, the political dynamics in the state are expected to undergo significant changes, with the BJP aiming to establish itself as a viable alternative to the LDF and UDF.
