Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is on a significant diplomatic visit to Russia from December 8-10, 2024, aimed at strengthening the India-Russia defence cooperation. One of the key events of this visit is the commissioning of INS Tushil, the Indian Navy’s newest multi-role stealth-guided missile frigate. The event will take place on December 9 at Yantra Shipyard in Kaliningrad, with Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi accompanying Singh for the ceremony. INS Tushil is an important addition to India’s naval fleet and represents the growing military cooperation between India and Russia.

The commissioning of the INS Tushil comes at a time when India-Russia military relations are expanding rapidly. The two countries have been engaged in regular defense dialogues, and Rajnath Singh’s visit to Russia will further solidify this strategic partnership. Singh’s presence in Moscow also highlights India's focus on enhancing its military capabilities, including the acquisition of advanced defence technology and strengthening military-to-military cooperation.

During his visit, Rajnath Singh will also co-chair the 21st meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC) with Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov on December 10. This meeting will cover a range of military and defense issues, from military-to-military cooperation to the development of advanced weaponry and systems. Both leaders will discuss regional security concerns and key global issues of mutual interest. This is expected to enhance Indo-Russia defence ties further and align their approaches to various security challenges.

In addition to his official duties, Rajnath Singh is scheduled to pay his respects at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, a tribute to the Soviet soldiers killed during World War II. This gesture reflects the deep historical ties between the two nations and highlights India’s respect for Russia's sacrifices in global conflicts.

Looking ahead, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to visit India for the annual India-Russia summit. The visit is expected to take place in early 2025, with dates to be finalized through diplomatic channels. This summit will further cement the strong ties between India and Russia, particularly in the fields of defence, energy, and trade.
