The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scripted history at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on May 27, 2025, by chasing down a mammoth target of 228 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to seal a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 league stage. This chase marked the highest successful run chase ever recorded at the Ekana Stadium, as well as the highest total ever chased by RCB in IPL history and the third highest chase in the IPL overall.

RCB entered the match knowing the stakes were high, with the final league game determining crucial playoff positions. Lucknow had posted a challenging total of 227/3, largely thanks to a stunning century by their captain Rishabh Pant, who scored an unbeaten 118 off just 61 balls. Pant’s innings was a masterclass of power-hitting and timing, featuring 11 fours and 8 sixes, displaying the aggressive form that had earned him a memorable IPL hundred after seven years since his last in 2018.

However, it was RCB’s lower middle order that stole the show in a tense, thrilling chase. After losing their captain Virat Kohli early in the chase, RCB found themselves needing 125 runs from 52 balls, a tough ask that tested their mettle. The stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma rose to the occasion with an electrifying innings of 85 runs from just 33 balls, hitting eight fours and six sixes. His explosive batting provided the impetus needed to keep the chase alive.

Alongside him, Mayank Agarwal played a crucial supporting role, contributing a quickfire 41 off 23 balls, laced with five fours. Together, the duo stitched a vital partnership under immense pressure. RCB’s run rate surged in the final overs as they smashed 50 runs in three overs between the 14th and 16th overs, dramatically turning the momentum in their favour.

The game reached a nail-biting climax in the 17th over bowled by Digvesh Singh Rathi, where Jitesh Sharma narrowly escaped dismissal due to a back-foot no-ball and a withdrawn non-striker run-out appeal. These moments proved decisive as Jitesh continued to pile on runs, ultimately finishing the chase with a six in the 19th over to secure a historic victory.

This win ensured that RCB ended the league stage with a top-two finish and the unique record of winning all seven of their away matches in the IPL 2025, highlighting their consistency and adaptability in challenging conditions.

As a result, RCB now face Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Qualifier 1 clash, while Mumbai Indians will take on Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator match, keeping the playoffs intensely competitive.

RCB’s triumph at Ekana is a testament to their fighting spirit, depth in batting, and ability to perform under pressure, making them strong contenders for the IPL 2025 title. The historic chase will be remembered as one of the great IPL run chases, showcasing thrilling cricket and high drama right till the final ball.
