Samajwadi Party expels three MLAs over anti-party and communal activities

  • Samajwadi Party expelled three MLAs for anti-party activities and deviating from its inclusive, secular ideology.

  • The expelled leaders allegedly supported communal and divisive elements contrary to SP’s core values.

  • SP said the leaders were given time for self-correction, but persisted in damaging public interest and party principles.

In a major disciplinary move, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday, June 23, 2025, expelled three sitting MLAs — Abhay Singh (Gosainganj), Rakesh Pratap Singh (Gauriganj), and Manoj Kumar Pandey (Unchahar) — citing anti-party activities and promotion of ideologies that contradict the party’s core principles.

In an official statement released by the SP, the party stated that the trio had endorsed communal, divisive, and regressive ideologies, contradicting the inclusive and progressive ethos of the Samajwadi Party. The statement added that such views undermine public interest and are harmful to the welfare of marginalised communities.

Anti-Party Conduct and Ideological Breach

The SP leadership accused the expelled MLAs of:

  • Actively supporting political ideologies and forces considered anti-women, anti-farmer, anti-youth, anti-Dalit, anti-business, and anti-backward.

  • Deviating from the party's long-held commitment to social justice, secularism, and equality.

  • Working in ways that directly harmed public interest and internal party unity.

The statement further said, “Despite a grace period given to them for self-correction, they continued to support elements that stand against the rights of the poor, backward, and marginalised sections of society.”

Zero Tolerance for Indiscipline

The Samajwadi Party made it clear that the decision reflects the leadership’s zero-tolerance policy toward those who attempt to erode the ideological base of the party for personal or political gains.

There is no room in the party for individuals who act against public welfare or its core ideological framework,” read the SP’s statement, sending a strong message to other party members ahead of the next round of elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Political Implications and Backdrop

The move comes at a crucial time for the SP as it prepares for the 2025 bypolls and the 2026 state assembly elections. Party insiders suggest that the leadership, led by Akhilesh Yadav, is attempting to streamline the internal structure and reassert ideological clarity, especially in the face of increasing right-wing political pressure.

The three expelled MLAs, all of whom were considered to be independent-minded voices within the party, had previously raised eyebrows with their contrarian public remarks, including criticisms of party leadership and alleged proximity to rival political forces.

While none of the three have made official public statements as yet, sources close to them suggest that legal and political responses are being considered.

Conclusion

The expulsion of Abhay Singh, Rakesh Pratap Singh, and Manoj Kumar Pandey signals a firm attempt by the Samajwadi Party to assert ideological discipline and cleanse its ranks of dissenting elements. As the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh continues to intensify, the SP’s strong message underscores its commitment to progressive, secular governance — and the political cost of deviating from it.
