1 Reuters confirmed the photo Trump showed Ramaphosa as evidence of white genocide in South Africa was from Congo, depicting humanitarian workers after conflict with M23 rebels.
2 The image was originally shot by Reuters journalist Djaffar Al Katanty in Goma, DRC and misused to support false claims about white farmers being killed in South Africa.
3 Trump also showed a video misrepresented as a burial site of white farmers, which was actually a memorial on a South African highway, disproving the conspiracy theory.

During a high-profile meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on May 21, 2025, US President Donald Trump presented photographic evidence he claimed showed a white genocide occurring in South Africa. However, a Reuters fact-check report revealed that the key photo used by Trump was not taken in South Africa at all, but rather in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The photograph was a screenshot from a Reuters video filmed in Goma, a city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, showing humanitarian workers carrying body bags in the aftermath of deadly clashes with Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. Reuters video journalist Djaffar Al Katanty explained the difficulty and effort involved in gaining access to film in that dangerous conflict zone. He expressed shock upon seeing his footage used by the US President to make unsubstantiated claims about violence in South Africa.

Trump’s claim was that the photo depicted white farmers being killed by black people in South Africa – a conspiracy theory long circulated among far-right groups without credible evidence. The photo was originally published alongside a blog post by the conservative online publication American Thinker, which misidentified the image. The article’s managing editor Andrea Widburg acknowledged the misidentification but argued the article’s broader criticism of South Africa’s government remained valid.

In addition to the photo, Trump showed Ramaphosa a short video intended to further prove the claim of white genocide. The footage displayed a populist politician performing an anti-apartheid song with controversial lyrics about killing farmers. Trump stated that people are fleeing South Africa for their safety and claimed the video showed graves of a thousand white farmers.

However, independent reports by The Guardian and BBC clarified that the footage was actually taken along a highway between Newcastle and Normande in South Africa, showing a memorial rather than an actual burial site. Rob Hoatson, who established the memorial, confirmed it was not a graveyard but a symbolic installation to raise awareness.

Following the meeting, the White House shared the video on its official social media platform. Yet none of the evidence presented by Trump has been substantiated by any credible authority. The claims of a white genocide in South Africa remain unproven and widely dismissed by experts as a misleading narrative.

This incident highlights the risks of misusing imagery and misinformation in sensitive diplomatic contexts, especially when such narratives feed into racial tensions and unfounded conspiracy theories.
