What's covered under the Article:
- Xizang region experiences two major earthquakes in five hours, causing widespread damage and fatalities.
- Over 50 deaths and dozens of injuries reported from Dingri County, with extensive building collapses.
- Ongoing aftershocks and disaster relief efforts by the Chinese military, air force, and rescue teams.
In the early hours of January 7, 2025, the Xizang region of Tibet was struck by two significant earthquakes within a span of just five hours. The first earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, jolted Dingri County in Xigaze City, part of the Xizang Autonomous Region. This earthquake, which hit at 9:05 am IST, resulted in tragic consequences, leaving at least 53 people dead, with 62 others injured. The tremors caused massive destruction in the area, including the collapse of several buildings, leaving many people trapped under debris.
The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 28.5°N latitude and 87.45°E longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) swiftly responded, deploying drones to assess the epicenter and activating disaster relief plans. The PLA Western Theater Command also set up a team consisting of transport planes, medical helicopters, and ground forces to assist in the rescue operations.
Earthquake Impact and Damage in Dingri County
In Dingri County, located in the Xigaze area, the earthquake caused widespread devastation. Buildings in Tonglai Village in Changsuo Township collapsed, with numerous houses destroyed. As the Xinhua News Agency reported, the regional disaster relief authorities have been actively working to provide aid to those affected. Local authorities are focusing on rescuing people trapped in the rubble, treating the injured, and providing emergency relief to the survivors.
The earthquake’s impact was not confined to Dingri County alone. A series of aftershocks followed, further complicating rescue efforts. The first aftershock, registering a magnitude of 4.7, occurred at 7:02 am IST, just hours after the initial earthquake. Between 7:02 am IST and 9:11 am IST, the region experienced seven significant aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 4.3 to 5.0, putting the population in a constant state of alert.
Aftershocks and Continued Relief Operations
In the wake of the major earthquake, aftershocks continued to shake the region, with the largest aftershock of 5.0 magnitude occurring at 7:13 am IST. These aftershocks caused further structural damage to buildings that had already been weakened by the initial earthquake. Seismic activity in the Xizang region is still ongoing, with frequent tremors recorded by the National Centre for Seismology. These aftershocks have raised concerns about the safety of the remaining buildings and the stability of the region’s infrastructure, complicating efforts to assist those in need.
In response to the escalating crisis, the PLA and local disaster response teams have been working tirelessly to provide relief and conduct rescue operations. The Chinese military has deployed a combination of drone assessments, transport aircraft, and medical units to the affected areas, helping to provide immediate aid to the victims. Helicopters have also been utilized for evacuating the injured and delivering essential supplies.
Continuing Efforts and International Attention
As the situation in Tibet continues to develop, international attention has focused on the ongoing relief operations and the severity of the disaster. The Xizang region has experienced considerable challenges due to its geography, with its mountainous terrain and lack of direct access to coastal ports. The Chinese government has vowed to continue supporting the disaster relief efforts and provide both financial and logistical resources to help rebuild the affected communities.
Conclusion: A Region in Crisis and Recovery
With aftershocks still being reported and relief efforts ongoing, the Xizang region faces an uphill battle in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes. The immediate focus remains on providing aid to survivors, recovering the bodies of those lost, and rebuilding the infrastructure that was destroyed. As the situation continues to evolve, more updates are expected on the rescue efforts and seismic activity in the region.
