  • Tannu Kumar was killed and buried outside her in-laws' home; police recovered her body two months later.

  • In-laws reported her missing after branding her mentally unstable and covering up the grave.

  • FIR registered against four family members; two are in custody while others remain absconding.

Faridabad, June 21, 2025 — A horrifying case of dowry-related murder has come to light in Faridabad’s Roshan Nagar area, where a 24-year-old woman named Tannu Kumar was allegedly killed by her in-laws and buried in front of their house. The murder remained concealed for nearly two months, until the body was exhumed by the authorities following weeks of pressure from the victim’s family.

Tannu, a native of Shikohabad in Firozabad district, Uttar Pradesh, was married two years ago to Arun Singh, a resident of Roshan Nagar. However, what began as a union quickly deteriorated into alleged abuse and demands for dowry, culminating in her brutal murder and a cover-up that now has shocked both the city and state.

🚨 The Disappearance and the Suspicious Pit

According to official sources, on April 23, 2025, Arun Singh and his father Bhoop Singh called an earthmover to dig a 10-foot deep pit on the street directly in front of their residence. The following day, a mason was brought in to refill the pit, effectively concealing what lay underneath.

Merely two days later, the family reported Tannu as missing, claiming she was mentally unstable. They approached the local Palla Police Station, registering a missing person’s complaint.

The timing and behavior raised suspicion, especially among Tannu’s father Hakim, who alleged that the pit had been dug precisely to hide her remains.

“When I reached the house and saw that freshly filled pit, I knew something was wrong,” Hakim told reporters. “But the police refused to register our complaint or investigate.”

đź‘®‍♂️ Police Inaction and Delayed Justice

Hakim, accompanied by his other daughter Preeti, said that he repeatedly visited the police station, urging authorities to inspect the site. Despite his pleas, no investigation was launched for weeks. It was only in mid-June, nearly two months after the burial, that the police began probing the case.

On Friday morning (June 21), Naib Tehsildar Jaswant Singh, accompanied by police, supervised the digging of the suspected site. To the horror of the gathered crowd, Tannu’s decomposed body was recovered from the pit.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, following which the body was handed over to her family.

⚖️ FIR and Arrests

An FIR has been registered at the Palla Police Station under sections related to murder, dowry harassment, and evidence tampering. Those named in the FIR include:

  • Bhoop Singh (father-in-law)

  • Sonia (mother-in-law)

  • Arun Singh (husband)

  • Kajal (sister-in-law)

While Bhoop Singh and Arun Singh have been taken into custody, the other two remain absconding. Police have launched raids at multiple locations to trace and arrest the remaining accused.

A senior police official told The Hindu,

“We are investigating the full sequence of events, including the dowry-related allegations and the delay in reporting the matter. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty, including police officials who failed to act on the family’s initial complaint.”

🛑 History of Dowry Harassment

Hakim alleged that his daughter had faced persistent harassment since her marriage. Tannu had even returned to her paternal home within the first year of marriage due to cruel treatment by her in-laws. After intervention by a local panchayat, she had reluctantly agreed to return to her husband’s home — a decision that turned fatal.

“My daughter cried to me several times. They wanted money we could not afford. I warned them, but she went back out of social pressure,” Hakim recounted tearfully.

This isn’t an isolated story in India. Thousands of women face dowry-related violence, often going unreported due to social stigma, apathetic law enforcement, or community pressure to 'adjust'.

🧾 Legal Framework and Growing Concerns

India’s Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and provisions under Section 304B and 498A of the IPC criminalize dowry demand, cruelty by in-laws, and dowry deaths, but activists say implementation remains weak.

Faridabad police’s alleged refusal to act for almost two months despite visible evidence — a freshly filled pit — raises questions about the efficacy and sensitivity of local law enforcement.

Legal experts suggest that the officers who refused to investigate should face departmental inquiry.

📊 Dowry Deaths in India: A Continuing Crisis

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB):

  • Over 6,500 dowry deaths are recorded each year in India.

  • Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana remain among the top states reporting such cases.

  • Only a fraction result in convictions due to delays, social compromises, and evidence tampering.

Tannu Kumar’s case tragically underscores how women, even in urban neighborhoods, are still not safe within their own homes.

🧩 Public Reaction and Calls for Accountability

The gruesome discovery has sparked anger and outrage across Faridabad and on social media. Women's rights activists and civil society groups are demanding:

  • Immediate arrest of all absconding accused.

  • Suspension and inquiry against the police officers who failed to act.

  • Government compensation for Tannu's family.

  • Judicial oversight into the investigation process.

📣 Conclusion: A Cry for Justice

The murder of Tannu Kumar is not just a case of dowry death — it’s a chilling reminder of how violence against women continues in plain sight, and how authorities can fail to act even when evidence is buried right in front of them.

As her family mourns, the question of accountability looms large — not just over the in-laws, but also over the system that allowed them to get away with murder for two months.

The case is now a test of the Haryana government’s resolve to uphold women’s rights and deliver justice — not just in words, but in swift, tangible action.
